MORE ROOM SERIES: LINEBACKERS 2026

Here’s a breakdown of how the linebacker position currently stands for the 2026 season and a look at what could change between now and next season.

Inside linebacker has been a strength for the Oregon Ducks for the past few seasons, largely in part due to the presence of Bryce Boettcher. The Eugene native has been the heart and soul of the defense for the past two seasons. But 2025 was his final season, and the Ducks will have to find a way to replace his 100+ tackles and overall leadership on the defensive side of the ball.

Oregon definitely has some options in that area, but it won’t be easy. You just don’t replace a player like Boettcher, so I guess the Ducks may do it by committee and through the portal.

The 2026 Oregon linebacker room is led by seniors Jerry Mixon Jr. and Devon Jackson. This experienced duo is supported by a young, talented core including sophomores Brayden Platt, Gavin Nix, and Dylan Williams, with 4-star freshman Tristan Phillips expected to contribute immediately. Let’s take a look at the projected 2026 starters we’ll start with our:

Starters: Jerry Mixon Jr. (Sr.), Devon Jackson (R-Sr.).

Then our

Key Returners: Brayden Platt (So.), Gavin Nix (So.), Dylan Williams (So.), Nasir Wyatt (So.), Jay Harden (So.), Will Straton (R-Jr.).

And a few promising

Newcomers: Tristan Phillips (Fr.), Braylon Hodge (Fr.).

And make these observations

Analysis: The group is considered talented but somewhat inexperienced behind the leaving starters, with coaches potentially looking to the portal to add depth.

Key Players to Watch:

  • Jerry Mixon Jr.: Coming off a breakout 2025 season with 57 tackles, he is expected to lead the unit.
  • Devon Jackson: Projected to start alongside Mixon, bringing experience and speed.
  • Tristan Phillips: Highly touted incoming freshman compared to Boettcher by coaches.
  • Brayden Platt & Gavin Nix: Former 4-star recruits expected to take on larger roles

Beside the Kicking game, this is the second concern, in my mind, going forward. Next up for the series…Defensive Line/Edge. Until then…Go Ducks.
